Do Your Old Gutters Need Repaired?

Signs that your gutters are old and in need of repair:

• Installed with "spike and ferrule"
• Showing significant color fade
• Seams along the run of the gutter

It's not unusual for us to show up to a job for repairs, only to realize the client is in need of a gutter installation instead. If your gutters are leaking at the seams, then it may be time to update to seamless gutters. If your gutters were installed with spike and ferrule, this means they are likely 20 years old and you could also potentially have rotting fascia on your home.

Warning Signs of Failing Gutters:

• Gutters hanging off the roof 
• Downspout disconnected from the gutter
• Water in basement or home
• Leaking or dripping seams
• Overflowing gutters – likely just needs a gutter cleaning
• Spike & ferrules pulling away from the gutter (where you can see the nail head popping out)
• Mold in areas below gutters
• Rotting exterior features, such as deck boards, windowsills, garage doors, and regular doors below where gutters are, or should be
• Erosion and lines in your landscape
• Sidewalks, patios, driveways and stairs cracking or lifting
• Paint flaking or peeling near the base of the home
• Dips or back pitch in gutters

A properly installed gutter system, maintained by regular gutter cleanings or maintenance or protected with gutter guards, should last up to 30 years. Improperly maintained gutters usually fail in 10 years or less.
